The days are long gone whereupon a student could simply come to the SAT test location, pencils in hand, on a Saturday and take the test unprepared.
The test is tougher and longer now and the other test takers have been preparing for months. (And American students are also competing against well-prepared foreign students.)
In essence, the test may be viewed as consisting of math problems (through algebra 2) and English problems (through at least grade 12 competency). Mostly grade 11 students take the test, but older students may also take it.
But it's not just the test problems that are a problem. Students are under stress and rushed. Each segment is timed. Consequently, strategy becomes as important as knowledge.
We use an SAT math specialist for the math preparation and an SAT English specialist for the English portions. This is done one-to-one, or, we offer SAT MINI CLASSES in winter.
Students MUST also have a preparation book. There are several to choose from, all good, and all including practice tests.
We like the 2007 Barron's SAT book best. (It costs $17 delivered. Call to order) Major book stores also offer these books. (Make sure you are buying the latest version.)
